What happened during Day 3 of 49ers training camp on Friday? The San Francisco 49ers concluded their third day of training camp on Friday, which had a much different feel to it than Thursday’s scrimmage-heavy day.
With a number of key players not practicing, the 49ers had a very short practice in what seemed more like a reset day ahead of their final practice of the non-padded portion of training camp, which is set to take place on Saturday.
If you missed it, here are my three quick takeaways from what I saw on Day 3 of training camp.
Now, let’s get into my notes and observations of what unfolded on Friday.
CB changes
Starting cornerback Charvarius Ward did not practice on Friday, leaving an opening with the first-team defense for the younger players to fill.
Isaac Yiadom stepped into the outside role alongside Deommodore Lenoir in the base package, while the 49ers tried a few different looks in their nickel package.

Nick Sorensen spoke about what he’s seen in the former Carolina Panther When Charles Omenihu left San Francisco for Kansas City before the 2023 season, the departure left a void in the 49ers’ defensive line rotation due to Omenihu’s flexibility to play inside and outside on the line. Omenihu was acquired for a sixth-round pick, and the move reaped many benefits for the 49ers and Omenihu himself, as he signed a lucrative two-year, $16 million contract with the Chiefs.
The 49ers are looking for lightning to strike twice as Yetur Gross-Matos signed a two-year deal this offseason. Once again, the team is betting on a player’s traits that haven’t been fully realized and hoping to unearth Gross-Matos’ potential as a chess piece for the defensive line.
Defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen spoke at length about the 49ers’ plans for Gross-Matos and the abilities that stood out during the first two days of training camp.

What happened during Day 2 of 49ers training camp on Thursday? The San Francisco 49ers concluded their second day of training camp on Thursday, which was a scrimmage-heavy day where the offense and defense went back and forth making plays.
While left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk didn’t practice, the 49ers had a majority of their roster on hand for their second practice, with nearly every star in uniform working.
If you missed it, here are my three quick takeaways from what I saw on Day 2 of training camp.
Now, let’s get into my notes and observations of what unfolded on Thursday.
Rotations on offense
The 49ers started off the day with a few changes to their offensive line, as Jaylon Moore stepped in as the No. 1 left tackle, while Spencer Burford got the first reps at right guard.
With no Brandon Aiyuk or Ricky Pearsall, Deebo Samuel and Chris Conley were the top outside receivers. Danny Gray and Jacob Cowing (slot) Collapse

What does the 49ers projected 53-man roster look like on defense ahead of training camp? The San Francisco 49ers have begun training camp, with the first practice of the two-week period taking place on Wednesday, while padded practices are expected to begin next week.
During camp and the preseason, several players will be fighting for roster spots and their place on the depth chart, as the 49ers have accumulated a good amount of young depth to complement their star-studded talent, especially on the defensive side.
So, as training camp begins, let’s predict the 53-man roster for the first time this offseason. I began with the offense, so let’s transition to the defense in this installment.

“He’s going to cave; it’s just a matter of when.
Williams — not so much. By contrast, he’s subjected to daily fines of $50,000 which, because he’s not on a rookie deal, can’t be forgiven by the team after the fact. Do you think the future first-ballot Hall of Famer is sweating it? Yeah right. His unspoken message to the team: Put it on my tab.
Other than avoiding revokable fines, I’m not sure what Aiyuk is trying to accomplish. On Wednesday, Shanahan told reporters that he didn’t see much difference between a hold-in — a player showing up but not practicing — and a holdout.
In this case, however, there’s a key distinction.
Aiyuk, by holding in, is already making it clear that he isn’t going anywhere.

An extension feels inevitable, as it would save the 49ers a significant amount of money Trent Williams did not report to practice due to contract-related issues. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said it’s something the San Francisco 49ers knew could be a possibility:
“I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident that it’ll all work out in the long run, and he’ll be here, and we’ll get on the same page with everything. I think Trent will be OK missing a few practices.”
Shanahan said that discussions have been going on for a while. Multiple beat reporters tweeted that general manager John Lynch and Williams’ reps are currently speaking. It doesn’t seem like Shanahan or the organization believes this will be an issue.
Williams is slated to earn $20.8 million this season. Next year, he’s on the books for $23.35 million. When you look at the average earnings based on guaranteed money per season, Williams is outside of the top 10. So, when you Collapse

17 HRS AGO - D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports
It was a major rest day for the 49ers as they had a short practice on Day 3 of camp. The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up Day 3 of training camp on Friday, which had a much different tone to it than Thursday’s practice.
After an eventful day that involved a good amount of team drills on Thursday, the 49ers had a much lighter practice on Friday that wrapped up quickly, while a number of players did not participate.
Here are three quick takeaways from Day 3 of 49ers training camp.
Major rest day
One of the bigger takeaways from Thursday’s practice was the participation of San Francisco’s top stars, as every player expected to practice was out there and competing.
That led to a high-energy day from the 49ers on Thursday, with a number of top players making their mark on the day.
It was the opposite on Friday, which felt more like a day just to get through, as the 49ers had several key players resting.

Sorensen highlighted Mustapha’s communication skills and how much he cares. Most rookies’ heads are spinning during the first week of training camp. They’re used to playbooks that are easy to digest and be able to waltz onto the field and rely on their athletic ability.
That doesn’t fly at this level. The 15-hour commitment that you had in college will have you riding the pine in the pros. For most, by the time you figure out the type of work ethic it takes to excel in the NFL, it’s too late.
That doesn’t appear to be an issue for San Francisco 49ers rookie safety Malik Mustapha. Working with the second team, Mustapha had an interception on Wednesday and nearly hauled in another on Thursday. If he keeps making plays on the ball, it won’t be long until the rookie out of Wake Forest earns reps with the first team.

It was the first open practice of the offseason, and I was there in attendance for what was a pretty even practice, with the offense and defense making plays on an eventful day.

Stars show out
When it comes to 49ers training camp, it’s usually more about the position battles and players fighting for roster spots as the coaches go through reps for the first, second, and third teams.
But, that doesn’t mean that the stars can’t still hold their ground when on the field, as that was the case on Thursday.

Once OTAs concluded, 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner had nothing but great things to say about Winters. Warner said Winters had the best OTAs of any player.
“I feel like he’s come a long way since last year,” Warner said. “I remember he came in as a rookie and was struggling to learn the plays and trying to get in shape, as well as all of those little things you got to learn as a professional.

John Lynch said Aiyuk’s negotiations have been challenging. The San Francisco 49ers' last domino heading into the regular season is to extend star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. As veterans reported to the facility yesterday for training camp, Aiyuk did report, but it is uncertain if this is a “hold-in” situation. However you slice it, it is an excellent thing Aiyuk is in the building.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Aiyuk won’t practice due to back and neck soreness: “He’s going to stay out of practice, which is obviously a ‘hold in.’ It’s what we expected. I understand the situation fully.”
An extension with a few commas in it would have Aiyuk feeling fresh and better than ever.
The 49ers have run into this issue with previous negotiations. However, this situation feels a bit different compared to the Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa situations with the signings of other receivers around the league and the public nature of the discussions.
